HAPPY TOGETHER

Consciously or unconsciously, we tend to interpret the connotative meaning imbued with an object. When it comes to art, this tendency stands out more. For this reason, art interpretation becomes unintelligible, as a result, the artwork loses the opportunity to fully express itself. Rather than finding the hidden meanings in the work and decoding it, sometimes we need to liberate ourselves to fulfill the true meaning of recognition. 'Hwajodo', a Bird-and-flower painting, does not require a specific attitude towards the paintings. Familiar motifs of birds and flowers in this painting, rather than attaching a significant political-ideological concept to it, is already delightful and excellent for decoration. The symbolism behind each subject is incidental.

On the other hand, <Hwajodo> is aesthetically easy to appreciate, but it is difficult to draw. Since everyone knows how flowers and birds look like, it is impossible to be a great painting by simply reproducing their appearances. It is possible only through delicate and detailed observations, excellent compositions, great drawings, an exceptional sense of color, and many experiences in paintings are harmonized. The sincerity in cutting out pieces of mother-of-pearl and techniques of embroidering one leaf and one bird beautifully allow us to imagine a painter from the Chosun Dynasty laid a paper down to start painting in splendid hand movements. Not to mention the brilliant light of mother-of-pearl.

A marvelous pair of birds and flowers in full bloom reveal the energetic birth of nature, its marvelous beauty, and brilliant harmony. Hwajodo pursues a harmony in life with nature, relaxes the mind and eyes of the beholder, and gives tremendous comfort. For that reason, from the royal family to the general people, all classes endeared this representative folk painting.
